Our summer camps take camper health seriously. A number of medical forms are required before your camper can be admitted to camp.
Medical Support
Minor ailments are treated promptly by our nursing staff at the Academy Health Center, which is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week while camp is in session. Should a camper require admission to the Health Center, twelve inpatient beds are available in addition to regular nursing care and the services of the medical staff. A staff physician is also on call 24 hours a day. Local hospitals may be used for additional medical support if needed.
Health Information
Sick Call: All campers will be treated for routine medical illnesses/injuries at sick call. Emergencies will be seen at any time. All charges for medications, supplies, special procedures and laboratory services will be billed directly to the parents.
Parental Notification: Routine admissions to the Health Center will be followed, whenever possible, with parental notification. We will attempt to contact the parent/guardian immediately by phone when a camper is referred to Bryn Mawr Hospital for emergency treatment and prior to outside consultations.
Insurance Card: It is the parent/guardian's responsibility to obtain appropriate referrals/clearances from primary physicians and insurance carriers. All parents/guardians must include a copy (both sides) of all medical/dental/prescription cards in the event that a camper requires referral to an emergency room, outside consultant, or needs a prescription filled.
Lab X-Ray/Special Consultation: Supportive services will be ordered as deemed necessary by the Health Center staff. Clinical staff will make every effort to coordinate services with the parent/guardian. All results of x-rays, lab studies or consultative reports are available, on request, for your primary care provider.
Pre-existing Conditions: All conditions requiring specific restrictions from physical activities must be documented by the camper’s physician and accepted by the Director of Health Services prior to arrival. Special circumstances aside, all campers will be expected to fully participate in all physical activities. Conditions not disclosed to the Health Center staff that could cause harm to the camper will not be the responsibility of the VFMA Camp.
Physical Exams: All campers (old and new) are required to have on file with the Health Center a physical exam completed after July 20, 2010. If a camper arrives without a completed physical exam documented on our examination form, one will be done at VFMA camp at an additional expense. If the exam submitted is incomplete (e.g. no vision or urine test,) deficiencies may be completed at an additional fee.
Immunization Record: Please, note that immunizations records are mandatory. Campers cannot be admitted without current immunizations. TB test results are mandatory prior to arrival at camp. If the test is not completed, one will be done by the VFMA&C Health Center at an additional cost.
Medications: All campers must turn in any medication, whether over the counter or prescription, for review and safekeeping by the Health Center staff at the time of arrival. There may be a few exceptions such as inhalers and some topical agents. Physician’s documentation to outline usage, dosage and any monitoring studies during course of medication should accompany all prescriptions. All medications must be pre-approved by the Health Center Director.
